Finding community within our communities…
I doubt we need to tell you this, but, having a baby? It changes everything. Whether it’s trading in late nights for early mornings, replacing your two-door car for a four-door, or converting your guest room to a nursery; welcoming a newborn into your lives is exciting. That excitement brings a lot of transition, as well as transformation.
The biggest post-baby change, however, somehow sneaks up on you. You see, having a newborn can mean you’re always surrounded by people, and yet you also feel very isolated at the same time.
A former client once said, “ I’m never alone. I’m alone all the time.”
You might be the first of your friend circle to have a baby. Maybe, you’re the last. Or, quite possibly, you’re like so many of our clients who move to the Triangle for school or a new job, leaving the familiarity of friends and family back home.
We get it. Really, we do. It’s one of the biggest reasons we feel so strongly about creating community for our clients. It’s a core value that drives nearly every aspect of Emerald Doulas.
During pregnancy, and at our Community Prenatal Meetings, you’ll meet others who are also anticipating the arrival of a new baby. You’ll not only get your birth and postpartum questions answered by our doulas, you’ll also hear questions and answers from the other expectant couples. Questions you might not even think to ask! Plus, you’ll have the chance to establish friendships and connections with those families.
Those relationships are continued throughout your baby’s first year with our monthly new parent’s support groups and weekly hangouts. Moms, dads, and LGBTQ families will find honest and open support as you all learn the ropes of parenthood.
And trust us, you’ll need that support. You also may actually want the advice of your peers, and ability to source opinions on topics from daycare options to the best pediatricians to how exactly you’re supposed to tactfully ask your mother-in-law to tone down the suggestions.
Join us, will you? Support groups happen monthly, in our office, and weekly hangouts start each Wednesday at 11 a.m.
